How do I transfer a domain to Krystal?

The process for transferring a domain in to Krystal is different depending on the domain's extension. Please use the links on the left, or scroll down to view the correct instructions for your domain.

For .uk domains (.co.uk/.org.uk/.me.uk etc)

.uk domains are also known as ccTLDs. A ccTLD is a country code Top Level Domain. ccTLDs are managed within each country by a nominated registration body. In the UK, that body is Nominet. You can visit their website at nominet.uk (external link opens in a new window) and find out more about their services.

Krystal Hosting Ltd are an authorised registrar for Nominet. Every Nominet registrar has what is called an IPS tag (the exact meaning of IPS has been a bit lost to history - external link opens in a new window).

Krystal's IPS tag is simply (all uppercase) KRYSTAL

Transferring .uk domains in to Krystal is free of charge.
  1. Login to your Krystal Client Area and click on Domains > Transfer Domain to Us from the left-hand menu. If you don't have a customer account with us yet you can Register here.
  2. Under the Domains drop-down click Transfer Domains to Us.
Enter the Domain Name you'd like to transfer and click Add to Cart.
An Authorisation Code is not required for .uk domains.
  3. You can add further domains to transfer or purchase before completing checkout - but please be sure to read the appropriate sections of this document for the type of domain you are transferring.
  4. Checkout to complete the part of this process. If you're a new client you'll be asked to Configure the domain during checkout - you will need to supply the correct registrant details.
  5. Please now contact your current registrar and ask them to update the IPS TAG to KRYSTAL on the domain you are transferring.
Your current registrar is contractually obliged to retag the domain in a "reasonable" time, though they may charge you for the "privilege". It costs a registrar £0 to RETAG a domain name, if your current registrar is going to charge you to leave then we'd recommend that you just go straight to the .uk registry, Nominet (www.nominet.uk - external link opens in a new window) and pay them £10 + VAT directly. This has 2 advantages; 1) they'll action it immediately and 2) it might help discourage the practice of charging to leave, which we believe is unethical - even if it doesn't at least your current registrar doesn't make any money from you leaving. If you don't already have a Nominet account, you will need to sign-up (external link opens in a new window) using the email address of the registered contact for the domain you wish to retag.
You may be asked to provide nameserver information, if so you can find details of the correct nameservers in this guide (link opens in a new window).
Once the domain name has been retagged you'll be able to manage it through your client area. Simply change the nameservers to ours if they haven't been already and it'll automatically work with your hosting (if you've ordered any).
Please see Nominet's terms and conditions before registering or renewing a UK domain name.
Please ensure you place an order with us to Transfer your domain to Krystal before requesting it be retagged. Otherwise it could result in your domain being detagged as our systems will not know it's meant to be there - please place an order first.

For .com .net .org .biz .info .us and other domains

.com .org .net and other non-country-specific domains are called gTLDs (generic Top Level Domains).

Transferring gTLDs into Krystal requires that several steps are completed correctly, otherwise the transfer will fail. Please read this guide carefully to avoid problems.

The transfer of your domain may fail if any of the following apply:
- the domain has been registered for less than (or previously transferred within) 60 days
- the domain's registrant contact first name, last name, organisation or email address have been changed within the last 60 days.
These are not terms of Krystal, they are defined by ICANN - external link opens in a new window.
Domain transfers effectively register the domain for a further year and add 1 year onto your expiry date, so you don't lose any time you have paid for. There is one exception to this rule: if the domain was recently reactivated from an expired state, you will not get a year added to the expiry date. So you'll need to pay any expiration fee and then the appropriate renewal fee.
  1. Preparing your domain for transfer away from the existing registrar
The first thing to do is to log into your existing domain registrar's control panel, and prepare your domain for transfer. These are the steps you must complete:
    1. Ensure that the domain is UNLOCKED
    2. Obtain the EPP code (also sometimes called the authorisation code or transfer key)
    3. Check the domains contacts and ensure that you are able to receive email at the Administrative contact email address for the domain. If you change the contact details the domain may be locked for 60 days - see the warning above. If this happens you will not be able to complete the transfer until after that time.
    4. Ensure any domain privacy service is turned off - this could cause emails not be received by the Administrative contact
If any of the above steps are not completed, the transfer cannot complete.

  3. Enter the Domain Name you'd like to transfer, EPP/Authorisation code if required and click Add to Cart.
  4. You can add further domains to transfer or purchase before completing checkout - but please be sure to read the appropriate sections of this document for the type of domain you are transferring.
  5. Checkout to complete the part of this process. If you're a new client you'll be asked to Configure the domain during checkout - you will need to supply the correct registrant details.

What happens next?

  • We will send an authorisation email to the Administrative contact email address for the domain. The email will have a subject like "Domain Transfer Request for YOURDOMAIN.COM" - and will be sent from the email address postmaster@name-services.com
  • The email will ask the recipient to authorise the transfer by clicking or visiting a special web page URL.
  • Once the transfer has been authorised, we request the domain name from the existing registrar, using the EPP key to validate the request.
  • If the domain is unlocked, then the transfer should normally complete within five days and should show up in your client area as Active status.

If the transfer fails due to a failure to prepare the domain (Step 1) correctly for transfer, then please raise a Support Request within 28 days and we will restart the transfer for you.

Custom Nameservers
On the domain configuration page you will have the option to enter custom nameservers. This is most often used by resellers to provide branded nameserver details to their clients. Adding custom nameserver details here does not create the nameservers. We have a separate guide on setting up custom name servers which you should follow first.
